Static head increases with building height, while pipe friction and fitting losses further affect pressure at the point of use.
A properly designed booster system can maintain a more consistent pressure throughout the distribution network.
For example, a multi-storey residential building may require a defined pressure at the uppermost fixture.
The booster pump must overcome:
Static elevation
Pipe friction losses
Fitting losses
Required terminal pressure
Other system losses
The VFD then helps maintain the desired pressure as demand changes.
This is much more useful than simply selecting a pump based on motor horsepower.
