Typical RO Plant Process for Data Centers
A representative system may include the following stages:
1. Raw Water Storage
Raw water is collected in a storage tank to provide a stable supply to the treatment plant.
2. Feed Pump
A suitable pump transfers water from the raw-water tank to the pretreatment system.
3. Multi-Grade Filter
The multi-grade filter reduces suspended solids and turbidity.
4. Activated Carbon Filter
Activated carbon can be used to reduce chlorine and certain organic contaminants.
Chlorine control is particularly important before polyamide RO membranes because free chlorine can damage the membrane.
5. Water Softening or Antiscalant
Depending on the feed-water chemistry, the system may use a softener, antiscalant dosing or another scale-control strategy.
6. Micron Cartridge Filter
A cartridge filter provides final particulate protection before the RO membranes.
7. High-Pressure Pump
The RO high-pressure pump provides the pressure required for membrane separation.
8. RO Membrane System
The RO membrane system reduces dissolved salts and other contaminants.
9. RO Permeate Storage
Treated RO water can be stored in a dedicated tank before distribution or further treatment.
10. DM Treatment
Where lower conductivity water is required, the RO permeate can be passed through a DM system.
11. Final Polishing
A mixed-bed unit or other polishing technology may be considered where very low conductivity is required.
12. Final Water Storage and Distribution
The treated water is stored and supplied to the designated data-center utility systems.
Customized RO DM Plant Design
There is no universal RO plant capacity for every data center.
The required capacity depends on the facility's water balance.
For example, the plant could be designed around:
5, 000 LPH
10, 000 LPH
20, 000 LPH
25, 000 LPH
50, 000 LPH
100, 000 LPH
Higher capacities for large campuses
The final capacity should be determined from the actual water requirement rather than selecting a plant based only on the data-center IT load.
The engineering calculation should consider:
Daily Water Requirement = Cooling Makeup + Other Utility Requirements + Process Requirements + Allowance
The RO plant capacity then needs to account for operating hours, recovery, reject water and required storage.
