What is Sand
Filter
A Sand Filter is a type
of water filtration system that uses sand or other granular materials to remove
impurities and contaminants from water.
These filters are normally used to remove
suspended solid substances that cause turbidity
from water. Their operation is very simple and consists in allowing
water to pass through several layers of quartzite (sand) and, possibly, a layer
of anthracite. The water passes through the filtering part, moving in the
top-down direction, and during the process the substances retained on the first
upper layer of sand increase filtration efficiency in the subsequent layers.
To clean the sand and thus regenerate the filter it is necessary to perform a backwash, whereby water (or water and air) passes through the filter from the bottom upwards, so that the backwash water will draw the previously filtered substances towards the point of discharge.
Filters filled with special materials are available for the treatment of waters polluted by iron and manganese.
How it works:
1.
Water flows through
the filter, which contains a layer of sand or other media.
2.
The sand traps
particles and impurities, allowing clean water to pass through.
3.
The filtered water
is then collected and distributed for use.
Types of Sand Filters:
1.
Slow sand filters: Use a slow flow rate and rely on biological processes
to remove impurities.
2. Rapid sand filters: Use a faster flow rate and often require coagulation and sedimentation steps.
3. Pressure sand filters: Use pressure to force water through the filter media.
Applications:
1.
Drinking water
treatment: Sand filters can remove
particulate matter, bacteria, and viruses from drinking water.
2.
Wastewater
treatment: Sand filters can be used to
treat wastewater before discharge into the environment.
3.
Swimming pool
filtration: Sand filters are commonly
used to keep pool water clean and clear.
4.
Industrial water
treatment: Sand filters can be used to
remove impurities from industrial process water
