Electroplating Effluent Treatment Plant (ETP): A Complete Solution for Industrial Wastewater
Electroplating is an essential industrial process used in automotive, aerospace, electronics, hardware, and manufacturing industries. While electroplating improves corrosion resistance and surface finish, it also generates highly contaminated wastewater containing heavy metals, acids, alkalis, cyanides, and toxic chemicals.
Without proper treatment, electroplating wastewater can cause severe environmental pollution and attract regulatory penalties.
Enviro specializes in designing and manufacturing customized Electroplating Effluent Treatment Plants (ETPs) that ensure compliance with pollution control board norms while reducing operational costs.
Why Electroplating Wastewater Needs Treatment
Electroplating wastewater typically contains:
Chromium (Cr)
Nickel (Ni)
Zinc (Zn)
Copper (Cu)
Cadmium (Cd)
Cyanide
Iron
Acids
Alkalis
Oil & Grease
Total Dissolved Solids (TDS)
Suspended Solids (TSS)
If discharged untreated, these contaminants can:
Pollute rivers and groundwater
Damage aquatic ecosystems
Harm human health
Corrode drainage systems
Lead to legal action and environmental fines
Sources of Electroplating Effluent
Wastewater is generated from:
Component cleaning
Acid pickling
Degreasing
Electroplating rinse tanks
Chromating
Passivation
Phosphating
Equipment washing
Floor cleaning
Typical Characteristics of Electroplating Wastewater
Parameter Typical Range
pH 2 – 11
Chromium 20 – 300 mg/L
Nickel 10 – 150 mg/L
Copper 5 – 100 mg/L
Zinc 10 – 200 mg/L
Cyanide 5 – 50 mg/L
TSS 100 – 1000 mg/L
COD 300 – 3000 mg/L
Actual values depend on the plating process and chemicals used.
Electroplating Effluent Treatment Process
1. Collection Tank
Wastewater from different plating lines is collected in an equalization tank.
Purpose:
Uniform flow
Homogeneous wastewater
Prevent shock loading
2. pH Adjustment
Acidic or alkaline wastewater is adjusted to the desired pH using:
Caustic Soda (NaOH)
Lime
Hydrochloric Acid (HCl)
Sulfuric Acid (H₂SO₄)
Proper pH is essential for effective heavy metal precipitation.
3. Chromium Reduction
Hexavalent Chromium (Cr⁶⁺) is highly toxic.
It is converted into Trivalent Chromium (Cr³⁺) using reducing agents such as:
Sodium Metabisulfite (SMBS)
Ferrous Sulphate
4. Heavy Metal Precipitation
Heavy metals are precipitated by increasing the pH to approximately 8.5–10.5.
Metals removed include:
Nickel
Zinc
Copper
Chromium
Iron
These metals form insoluble hydroxides.
5. Coagulation
Coagulants are added to destabilize suspended particles.
Common chemicals:
Alum
Ferric Chloride
PAC (Polyaluminium Chloride)
6. Flocculation
A polymer is dosed to form larger, heavier flocs that settle easily.
This improves sludge separation efficiency.
7. Clarification
The treated water enters a clarifier where:
Heavy sludge settles at the bottom.
Clear water overflows to the next treatment stage.
8. Pressure Sand Filter (PSF)
Removes:
Remaining suspended solids
Fine particles
Turbidity
9. Activated Carbon Filter (ACF)
Removes:
Colour
Odour
Organic contaminants
Residual chemicals
10. Final Discharge or Reuse
The treated water can be:
Reused for rinsing
Used for gardening
Used for cooling systems
Discharged after meeting pollution control norms
Sludge Treatment
Heavy metal sludge is hazardous and must be handled properly.
The sludge treatment process includes:
Sludge Collection Tank
Filter Press
Sludge Drying
Disposal through authorized hazardous waste recyclers
Chemicals Used in Electroplating ETP
Sodium Metabisulfite (SMBS)
Lime
Caustic Soda
Hydrochloric Acid
Sulfuric Acid
PAC
Alum
Ferric Chloride
Cationic/Anionic Polymer
