Hefty Fines, Possible Tariff Hike: BWSSB Readies To Tackle Bengaluru's Water Woes, Chairman Says 'Avoid Wastage'
Stricter regulations are now in place, including penalties for misusing potable water for activities like washing vehicles, roads, or watering gardens. A fine of Rs 5,000 is being imposed for violations.
With temperatures soaring, Bengaluru is once again facing concerns over water scarcity. The Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) has stepped up measures to ensure the city does not relive last summer’s crisis. Stricter regulations are now in place, including penalties for misusing potable water for activities like washing vehicles, roads, or watering gardens. A fine of Rs 5,000 is being imposed for violations.
BWSSB Chairman Ram Prasath Manohar told News18 that enforcement teams are on the ground, ensuring compliance.
“We have more than 5,000 field officials, including watermen, gangmen, sanitary inspectors, meter readers, and engineers on the ground. They identify violations and impose spot fines using our handheld billing machines. Additionally, citizens can report violations through our toll-free number 1916, and we will send a team for inspection. So far, 112 cases have been penalised and about Rs 5,60,000 fine has been collected," he said.
If there are violations, the officials reach the post, verify with the help of video and photographic evidence and immediately issue a spot fine to ensure future compliance.
