What Is an RO Water Plant for a Data Center?
A Reverse Osmosis Water Plant uses a semi-permeable membrane to reduce dissolved salts, minerals and many other contaminants from feed water.
In a typical data center water-treatment application, feed water passes through appropriate pretreatment before entering the RO system.
A typical treatment sequence may include:
Raw Water → Pre-Treatment → Micron Filtration → RO → Treated Water Storage → Distribution
The exact configuration depends on the source-water quality, required flow, water chemistry and application.
RO can be used to produce controlled-quality water for cooling-system makeup and other utility applications.
What Is a DM Water Plant?
DM stands for Demineralization.
A DM water system removes ionic impurities from water through ion-exchange technology. Depending on the required water quality, a DM system may use:
Cation exchanger
Degasser
Anion exchanger
Mixed-bed unit
Conductivity monitoring
Chemical regeneration system
A DM plant can be installed after RO when a significantly lower ionic load is required.
A commonly used configuration is:
Raw Water → Pretreatment → RO → DM → Mixed Bed → DM Water Storage
However, not every data center requires a complete DM system.
The correct approach is to determine the required water quality first and then select the treatment technology.
